Tips for Resume Writing

Resumes are normally the first glance a potential employer gets at an applicant, so you want to make a good first impression. There are a lot of tips out there on resume writing and many different ways to format your resume. Below are a few tips to keep in mind while writing a resume to make sure you catch the eye of the recruiter and land that dream job!

When writing a resume it’s important to use a basic font that is easy to read, both for hiring managers and for applicant management systems. Key words are very important and you should try matching some of your key words to words on the job description. If the employer is using an electronic search system and types in a key word (for example: executive assistant), you want to make sure you will pull in their search if you have that relevant experience.

It’s important to include all your contact information on your resume so employers can easily get in touch with you. Avoid attaching your picture, they will get to meet you in person when you land the interview!

Always make sure your resume is tailored to each employer, it may increase your chances of being noticed in the crowd.  Be sure all font size and color, bullet points and format are consistent throughout the entire resume. This will make it look neater and easier to read through. You want your resume to stand out, but you do not want it to be too flashy that it makes it hard to read.

One of the most important tips is to be truthful. Yes, you want to make yourself look good, but if you are caught in a lie your credibility is gone. Most likely a reference check will be conducted and the company will find out if you are lying. Just be yourself!

These are  just a few tips and are not required when writing your resume. There are a lot of helpful tools out there, so if you feel your resume could be better take advantage of them. One last tip- always have someone proof read your resume before sending it out and good luck!
